This project is an ongoing initiative aimed at upgrading and maintaining Burgaw's water infrastructure to ensure reliable fire protection and water distribution. Each year, 5-10 aging hydrants are replaced with modern 5 1/4" hydrants, which offer improved gallons per minute (GPM) flow rates. Collaborating closely with the Fire Department, the Public Works Department identifies and prioritizes hydrants in need of replacement based on factors such as age, condition, and functionality. Many of the existing hydrants, some dating back to the 1940s and 1950s, are replaced to mitigate the risk of failure and ensure adequate water supply in the event of a fire emergency. This project is essential for maintaining the town's infrastructure up to modern standards, enhancing fire protection capabilities, and safeguarding the community's safety. Additionally, it complements efforts to install insertion valves, enabling more efficient maintenance and emergency response procedures for the water distribution system. Through consistent replacement of aging hydrants, Burgaw demonstrates its commitment to preserving and enhancing critical infrastructure for the benefit of residents and businesses.
