The replacement of duty handguns utilized by the Police Department. While duty handguns are essential pieces of equipment, it's hoped they will never have to be used. However, to ensure the safety of both citizens and officers, it's crucial that they remain in constant good working order. Traditionally, duty handguns have been replaced on a ten-year schedule, but Burgaw has extended this timeframe in recent years due to the handguns holding up well. However, issues with some firearms have arisen, particularly with bent or stretched springs, necessitating replacement of faulty items by the department's armorer. Given these developments, the recommendation is to move to a new pistol platform that incorporates a red dot optical sight in conjunction with iron sights. This modern approach enhances target acquisition and improves accuracy, crucial factors in situations requiring the discharge of a firearm. The replacement of duty handguns will include the pistol, red dot optic, mounted light, and holster. New holsters will be necessary to accommodate the optic and light attachments, ensuring officers can carry their firearms safely and effectively while taking advantage of the latest technology to enhance accuracy and performance.
