The Mayor and administration have inquired about the feasibility of opening up the old jail for public viewing and tours. Although the old jail is structurally sound, issues such as lead paint and the poor condition of the windows resulting in water infiltration need to be addressed before public access can be permitted. A quote has been obtained for remediation of the paint, including encapsulating non-flaking paint to preserve the original color scheme. This undertaking will be lengthy and costly, but it is essential for achieving our goal. Several contractors have been consulted, but none are willing to begin work until the lead remediation process is completed. The plan is to address the remediation in FY2024-25, followed by window replacement and the creation of period-appropriate bunk staging and amenities like sinks and tubs in FY2025-26 to reflect small-town jail life.
